It’s always a good time to get into better shape. Still, summer is probably the best time of all to step up your fitness game and finally start getting into better shape.
There are a number of reasons why working out is both more enjoyable and easier to do during the summer:
1. The weather is nice
There’s no better time for exercising outside than during the warm months of summer. On a nice summer day, venturing into nature for an outdoor workout is an absolute joy. While during the colder months the natural world may be dead and gray, during summer nature is alive with beautiful plant and animal life. The summer offers a singular opportunity for combining fitness with exploration of nature at its most vibrant.
2. The opportunity for seasonal activities
Summer means the chance to participate in a variety of fitness activities that are impossible (or at least less enjoyable) during other seasons. Walking and running are much easier when the weather is warm and agreeable, as is hiking on a trail or up a mountain. Swimming in a lake or a pond is essentially a summer-only activity. Most outdoor sports — including soccer, tennis, ultimate Frisbee, and volleyball — are most popular and best appreciated during summer as well.
3. It’s easier to get motivated
When it’s cold outside and the sun sets early every day, you probably won’t feel like doing anything requiring much physical exertion. In contrast, the long, lovely days of summer make exercise seem natural and fun. Even if you work out in a gym rather than the outdoors, the mere fact that it is summer will still help boost your motivation.
The longer days and warmer weather of summer are practically designed for exercise. If you have been wanting to get into better shape, make it your resolution to take advantage this year of the wonderful opportunity offered by summer. You certainly won’t regret it if you get more exercise this summer.
